Crispy Jalapeno Bites

Equipment Needed

  • Sharp knife
  • Small spoon
  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking tray or air fryer basket
  • Parchment paper

Ingredients

Jalapeños

  • 6 to 8 fresh jalapeño peppers

Filling

  • 200 g cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar, Monterey Jack, or mozzarella
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt to taste

Optional Additions

  • Cooked bacon bits
  • Chopped green onions
  • Smoked paprika
  • Black pepper

For Crispy Coating (Optional)

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or panko
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter or oil

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Jalapeños

  1. Wash and dry the jalapeños.
  2. Slice each pepper in half lengthwise.
  3. Use a spoon to remove seeds and membranes.

Removing the membranes reduces heat while keeping the jalapeño flavor.


Step 2: Make the Filling

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine cream cheese and shredded cheese.
  2. Add garlic powder, onion powder, and salt.
  3. Mix until smooth and evenly combined.

The filling should be thick and spreadable.


Step 3: Fill the Jalapeños

  1. Spoon the cheese mixture into each jalapeño half.
  2. Smooth the top so the filling is level with the pepper.

Avoid overfilling, which can cause spillage during cooking.


Step 4: Add Optional Toppings

For a crispy top:

  1. Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter or oil.
  2. Sprinkle lightly over the filled jalapeños.

Cooking Methods

Air Fryer Method

  1. Preheat air fryer to 190°C (374°F).
  2. Line the basket with parchment paper.
  3. Arrange poppers in a single layer.
  4. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes until the peppers are tender and the tops are lightly golden.

Oven Method

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (392°F).
  2. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  3. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes until bubbly and lightly browned.

Grill Method

  1. Preheat grill to medium heat.
  2. Place poppers on foil.
  3. Grill for 10 to 12 minutes with lid closed.

Resting Before Serving

Let the jalapeño poppers rest for 2 to 3 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly and prevents burns.
