Ingredients
Basic Ingredients
- 2 to 3 medium potatoes
- Russet potatoes for crispier results
- Yukon Gold potatoes for creamier centers
- 1½ to 2 tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Optional Seasonings
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika or smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon dried rosemary or thyme
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- Fresh herbs for garnish
Equipment Needed
- Air fryer
- Sharp knife or mandoline slicer
- Large bowl
- Clean kitchen towel or paper towels
Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes
Wash the potatoes thoroughly to remove dirt. You may peel them if desired, but leaving the skin on adds flavor and texture.
Slice the potatoes into even rounds, about ⅛ inch (3 mm) thick. Uniform thickness is important for even cooking.
Step 2: Soak (Optional but Recommended for Extra Crispiness)
Place the sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water and soak for 20 to 30 minutes.
This step removes excess starch, which helps the potatoes crisp better in the air fryer.
After soaking, drain and rinse the potatoes.
Step 3: Dry the Potatoes Thoroughly
Lay the slices on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Pat them completely dry.
Removing surface moisture is essential for achieving crisp edges.
Step 4: Season the Potatoes
Transfer the dried potato slices to a large bowl.
Drizzle with oil and toss gently to coat all slices evenly.
Add salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings. Toss again to distribute seasoning well.
Step 5: Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat the air fryer to 380°F (195°C) for 3 to 5 minutes.
Preheating helps the potatoes start crisping immediately.
Step 6: Arrange in the Basket
Place the potato slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer as much as possible.
Some overlapping is acceptable, but avoid overcrowding. Cook in batches if needed.
Step 7: Air Fry the Potatoes
Air fry at 380°F (195°C) for 12 to 16 minutes.
At the halfway point (about 6 to 8 minutes), open the air fryer and shake the basket or flip the slices to ensure even browning.
Continue cooking until the potatoes are golden brown and crisp at the edges.
Step 8: Adjust for Desired Texture
- For softer potatoes, reduce cooking time slightly
- For extra crisp potatoes, cook an additional 2 to 3 minutes
- For thicker slices, add 2 to 4 minutes of cooking time
Step 9: Rest and Serve
Remove the potatoes from the air fryer and let them rest for 2 minutes.
Taste and add additional salt if needed.
Serve immediately for best texture.
