Ingredients
- 6 slices fresh white sandwich bread
Use soft white bread with no seeds or grains. Freshness is important because dry bread does not hold the toppings well. - 60 g butter, softened
Use real butter, not margarine. The butter should be soft enough to spread easily but not melted. - Hundreds and thousands
Also known as rainbow sprinkles. Use enough to fully cover the surface.
Equipment Needed
- Butter knife or spatula
- Clean cutting board
- Sharp knife
- Plate or serving tray
Preparing the Bread
- Place the bread slices flat on a clean surface or cutting board.
- If the crusts are very hard or thick, you may remove them. This is optional and based on preference. Traditionally, crusts are often removed for children’s parties.
- Make sure the bread is completely flat and not folded or compressed.
Buttering the Bread
- Check that the butter is soft. If it is too firm, leave it at room temperature for a few minutes.
- Using a butter knife, spread butter evenly over the entire surface of each slice of bread.
- Spread all the way to the edges. This is important because the butter is what makes the hundreds and thousands stick.
- The butter layer should be generous but smooth. Too little butter will cause patchy coverage, and too much will make the bread greasy.
Adding the Hundreds and Thousands
- Place a large plate or tray under the bread to catch excess sprinkles.
- Hold a slice of buttered bread flat.
- Sprinkle hundreds and thousands generously over the entire surface, making sure there are no visible gaps.
- Gently press the sprinkles into the butter with your hand or the flat side of a knife to help them adhere.
- Lift the bread carefully and shake off any loose sprinkles.
- Repeat with all slices.
Cutting the Fairy Bread
- Place a slice of prepared fairy bread onto a cutting board.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the slice diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner to form two triangles.
- For smaller servings, you can cut each slice into four triangles instead.
- Repeat with all slices.
Serving
Fairy bread should be served immediately or within a short time of preparation.
Arrange the triangles neatly on a plate or tray with the sprinkle side facing up. Overlapping slightly is fine, but avoid stacking too heavily, as this can crush the bread and smear the toppings.
Fairy bread is best enjoyed fresh, when the bread is soft and the sprinkles are crisp.
