Air Fryer Ham & cheese sandwich

Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread
    (white, sourdough, or sandwich bread all work well)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons butter, softened
    (or mayonnaise for extra browning)
  • 2 slices ham
  • 2 slices cheese
    (cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, or American)
  • Optional additions:
    • Mustard
    • Honey mustard
    • Pickles
    • Black pepper

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread

  1. Lay the bread slices flat on a cutting board.
  2. Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice.

The buttered sides will face outward to create a crisp, golden surface during cooking.


Step 2: Assemble the Sandwich

  1. Place one slice of bread butter-side down.
  2. Layer the cheese first. This helps it melt evenly and act as a “glue.”
  3. Add the ham slices, folding them gently rather than stacking flat.
  4. Add any optional condiments or seasonings.
  5. Place the second slice of cheese on top.
  6. Top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up.

Using cheese on both sides helps the sandwich hold together.


Step 3: Preheat the Air Fryer

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 180°C (356°F) for 3 minutes.

Preheating ensures immediate crisping instead of drying out the bread.


Step 4: Cook the Sandwich

  1. Place the sandwich in the air fryer basket.
  2. Cook at 180°C for 5 minutes.
  3. Carefully flip the sandwich.
  4. Cook for another 4 to 6 minutes until golden brown.

Check during the final minutes to avoid over-browning.


Step 5: Rest Before Serving

  1. Remove the sandwich from the air fryer.
  2. Let it rest for 1 to 2 minutes.

This allows the cheese to set slightly and prevents it from spilling out when cut.


Optional Crisping Tips

  • Place a toothpick through the center to prevent the top slice from lifting.
  • Lightly press the sandwich halfway through cooking for a flatter texture.
  • For extra crunch, lightly spray the bread with oil instead of butter.

Cheese Melting Tips

If your bread browns before the cheese melts:

  1. Lower temperature to 170°C.
  2. Extend cooking time by 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Loosely cover the sandwich with foil for the first half of cooking.
