Ingredients
For one or two sandwiches, you will need:
- Bread: 2 slices per sandwich. You can use white bread, whole wheat, multigrain, or any bread you prefer. Thick-cut bread works best for a soft interior and crispy exterior.
- Ham: 2–3 slices of your favorite deli ham. You can use smoked, honey-glazed, or regular ham.
- Cheese: 2 slices of cheese per sandwich. Cheddar, Swiss, American, or a mix is perfect for melty goodness.
- Butter: 1–2 teaspoons per slice of bread. Softened butter spreads easier and helps achieve that golden, crispy crust.
- Optional Additions: Mustard, mayonnaise, sliced tomato, pickles, or a pinch of black pepper. These add flavor, but are optional.
Equipment Needed
- Air fryer
- Butter knife or spatula
- Plate for assembling the sandwich
- Tongs for handling the hot sandwich
- Cutting board and knife for slicing
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheating your air fryer is important for even cooking. Set the temperature to 370°F (188°C). Let the air fryer run empty for 3–5 minutes while you prepare the sandwich. Preheating ensures the bread gets crispy and the cheese melts evenly.
Step 2: Prepare the Bread
While the air fryer is heating:
- Place your slices of bread on a clean cutting board or plate.
- Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter on one side of each slice. Make sure the butter goes edge to edge. This will be the outside of the sandwich that touches the air fryer basket.
- If you want extra flavor, you can also sprinkle a tiny pinch of garlic powder or paprika on the buttered side. This is optional but adds a subtle taste.
Step 3: Assemble the Sandwich
- Take one slice of bread and place it buttered side down.
- Layer 2–3 slices of ham evenly across the bread. Don’t overstuff, or the sandwich might not cook evenly.
- Place 2 slices of cheese on top of the ham. Make sure the cheese covers the ham completely, so it melts nicely.
- If you want, add optional ingredients like mustard, mayonnaise, sliced tomato, or black pepper.
- Place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side facing out.
Your sandwich is now fully assembled and ready to cook.
Step 4: Place the Sandwich in the Air Fryer
- Gently open the air fryer basket.
- Place the sandwich inside. Make sure there is space around it so hot air can circulate. Avoid stacking sandwiches directly on top of each other.
- Close the basket carefully.
Step 5: Air Fry the Sandwich
- Set the air fryer timer for 5–7 minutes.
- Halfway through cooking (around 2–3 minutes), carefully open the basket and flip the sandwich using tongs. This ensures both sides get golden brown and crispy.
- Continue cooking until the bread is golden and crispy, and the cheese is melted.
Step 6: Check Doneness
- The sandwich should be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
- If the cheese hasn’t melted completely, you can cook for an additional 1–2 minutes. Watch closely to avoid burning.
Step 7: Serve the Sandwich
- Remove the sandwich from the air fryer carefully; it will be very hot.
- Place it on a cutting board or plate.
- Let it rest for 1–2 minutes before slicing—this prevents the cheese from spilling out too much.
- Slice diagonally or straight down the middle, whichever you prefer.
