3-Ingredient Applesauce Bread Dessert

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or any kind you like)
  • 1 cup applesauce (unsweetened or sweetened)
  • 1–2 tablespoons butter

Optional for garnish (not counted in the 3 ingredients): a pinch of cinnamon, a drizzle of honey, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar


Step 1: Prepare Your Bread

  1. Take your bread slices out of the bag or packaging and lay them on a clean, flat surface.
  2. If the bread is slightly stale, don’t worry—that actually helps it soak up the applesauce without becoming too mushy.
  3. For thicker slices, cut them evenly so they cook more consistently.

Step 2: Spread the Applesauce

  1. Measure about 2–3 tablespoons of applesauce per slice of bread.
  2. Use a spoon to gently spread the applesauce evenly over the top of each slice. Leave a small edge around the bread if you want a crisp border.
  3. Make sure the layer is even so every bite has the sweet applesauce flavor.

Step 3: Add the Butter

  1. Cut the butter into thin slices or small pieces.
  2. Place the butter on top of the applesauce on each slice.
  3. Lightly press the butter into the applesauce with the back of the spoon so it melts more evenly while cooking.

Step 4: Cook the Dessert

You have two ways to cook this simple dessert:

Option A: Skillet Method (Golden, Soft, and Slightly Crispy)

  1. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat.
  2. Place the bread slices in the skillet, applesauce side up.
  3. Cover the skillet with a lid. This traps heat and melts the butter.
  4. Cook for 5–7 minutes, checking occasionally to make sure the bottom of the bread doesn’t burn.
  5. Optional: Flip the bread carefully to brown the bottom for 2–3 minutes.

Option B: Oven Method (Even Cooking for Multiple Slices)

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 10–15 minutes, until the bread is warmed through and the butter is melted.

Step 5: Serve

  1. Remove the bread slices from the pan or oven.
  2. Optionally sprinkle with cinnamon, powdered sugar, or a light drizzle of honey.
  3. Serve warm, so the applesauce is soft, slightly gooey, and combined with the melted butter.
  4. Enjoy each bite: crispy edges, soft bread, sweet and fruity topping, with a rich buttery finish.

Tips for Perfect Results

  • Bread choice: Thick slices hold applesauce better; thin slices may get soggy quickly.
  • Butter: Use unsalted butter to control sweetness; adjust if you prefer more richness.
  • Texture: Slightly stale bread works best because it soaks up applesauce without falling apart.
  • Make it fancy: Add chopped nuts, raisins, or a pinch of cinnamon for a small upgrade.
  • Quick version: Microwave for 30–60 seconds if you’re short on time—soft, warm, and ready in an instant.
