Ingredients
Basic Ingredients
- 2 to 3 bananas (firm but ripe, yellow with no brown spots)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (prevents browning)
Optional Add-Ons (Choose One or More)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup
- A pinch of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Cooking
- Nonstick cooking spray or light oil spray
Equipment Needed
- Air fryer
- Sharp knife or mandoline slicer
- Cutting board
- Mixing bowl
- Parchment paper (air fryer–safe)
- Tongs
Step 1: Choose the Right Bananas
Use bananas that are:
- Yellow
- Firm to the touch
- Not overly ripe
Overripe bananas contain too much sugar and moisture, which can cause burning before they crisp.
Step 2: Slice the Bananas Evenly
- Peel the bananas.
- Slice into thin rounds, about 1/8 inch thick.
- Keep slices as uniform as possible to ensure even cooking.
Thinner slices result in crispier chips, while thicker slices will be chewier.
Step 3: Prevent Browning
- Place banana slices into a bowl.
- Drizzle with lemon juice.
- Gently toss to coat all slices evenly.
This step helps preserve color and adds a subtle brightness to the flavor.
Step 4: Add Optional Seasoning
Choose your preferred flavor profile:
Sweet Version
- Add cinnamon and honey or maple syrup.
- Toss gently to coat.
Lightly Salted Version
- Sprinkle a small pinch of salt over the slices.
Vanilla Cinnamon Version
- Add vanilla extract and cinnamon for a dessert-style chip.
Avoid adding too much liquid, as excess moisture reduces crispiness.
Step 5: Prepare the Air Fryer
- Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes.
- Lightly spray the basket or line it with perforated parchment paper.
Step 6: Arrange the Banana Slices
- Place banana slices in a single layer.
- Do not overlap.
- Leave small gaps between slices for airflow.
Cook in batches if necessary.
Step 7: Air Fry the Banana Chips
- Cook at 350°F (175°C) for 8 minutes.
- Flip each slice carefully using tongs.
- Continue cooking for another 6–10 minutes.
Check frequently during the last few minutes to prevent burning.
Step 8: Cooling and Crisping
- Remove chips when golden and slightly firm.
- They will continue to crisp as they cool.
- Let rest on a plate for 5 minutes before serving.
Do not judge crispness immediately after cooking.
Texture Guide
- Light golden: slightly chewy
- Deep golden: crisp
- Dark brown: bitter and overcooked
